Backpacking LED Headlamp

Headlamp Review Details: Backpacking Headlamp
Product User Rating: 5/5
Availability: In Stock
Description:  When it comes to backpacking headlamps you have allot of choices.  The key things to consider are battery life, battery cross compatibility and headlamp durability.  I like to try and make sure all of my backpacking electronics uses the same battery type so that I can switch batteries between devices if needed. For that reason I have done my best to use a AAA size batteries.  I also have a solar charger that I sometimes bring along on my excursions so that I can recharge them if needed.  One of the best things about these modern LED headlamps is that there is so much competition in the market place that you can pick up a great headlamp for dirt cheap.  The unit that I recommend is the Vitchelo v800.  I used one on my last backpacking trip and it exceeded my expectations.  The brightness of the unit was incredible.  Here are some of the details:

  • LED Headlamp flashlight with red led light is SUPER BRIGHT, this allows you to see details at a distance up to 110 meters
  • 2 separated buttons for either RED LED or WHITE light makes choosing the right mode easy and convenient
  • WATERPROOF IPX6 headlamps have been tested, work great and include 3 BRAND NEW AAA DURACELL batteries
  • Provides up to 120 hours of lighting
  • Elastic headband soft, comfortable and strong

Best of all, this headlamp is currently on sale and you can save 59% if you act now.  The unit is going for $24.61 with free shipping

Backpacking Sleeping Bag

Kelty Backpacking Sleeping Bag

Kelty Backpacking Sleeping Bag

Kelty 20 Degree Down Backpacking Sleeping Bag

Kelty Sleeping Bag Review Details: Kelty Dry Down Backpackers Sleeping Bag
Product User Rating: 5/5
Availability: In Stock
Description:  I have owned over 10 sleeping bags in my life and this Kelty SB 20 Dry Down sleeping bag is the best I have ever owned.  From a backpackers perspective it is incredible as it is both lightweight and warm!  The lightweight Kelty SB 20 sleeping bag stands up to bad weather and cold conditions so that you can sleep through the night comfortably regardless of the conditions. Kelty has stuffed this sleeping bag with 800 fill insulation for an incredible warmth to weight ratio. The insulation’s DriDown treatment repels moisture so the down maintains warmth in rainy weather, and it also helps the bag dry faster in case the down gets wet. Head to toe waterproofing treatment on the shell finishes the head and foot to help keep you dry in case water seeps through your tent at night. Kelty built the SB 20’s shell out of nylon ripstop for lightweight durability, and a softer taffeta lining keeps you cozy all night long. The dual-sliding zipper locks in place and won’t snag on the fabric thanks to the draft tube. The toebox has a natural fit so your feet don’t feel scrunched. Additionally, Kelty includes a compression bag as well as a mesh storage sack to prolong the bag’s life when you aren’t using it.  I used this bag on my last winter trip to the Grand Canyon.  I had to deal with both rain and snow on that trip and the bag kept me dry and warm the entire time. So if you are looking for a great ultralight sleeping bag for an upcoming backpacking trip in approximately 10F – 40F weather, this is a great choice. Best of all, it is on sale right now!

Backpacking Knives

Backpacking Knife Recommendations

All knives are the same right?  Well, not really. There is a lot that goes in to building a good knife, from the hardness of the steel, weight of the knife, design of the blade, to the weight balance of the blade and handle.  Most important, you do not want the knife to fail on you when you need it.  You also need to consider if you want a folding blade or a fixed blade as both have their advantages and disadvantages.
So I am going to give 3 recommendations for backpacking knives. First off is a super high end folding knife.  Benchmade makes some of the highest quality knives in the world and the Contego Folding Knife is a great example of this.  Next is a less expensive Gerber folding knife.  With Gerber you get a good high quality knife at a low price. Lastly is a SOG fixed blade knife. Fixed blade knives are great because they can take a ton of abuse with out breaking and come in really handy when trying to do things like building a temporary shelter. The trade off with a fixed blade is that they typically weigh more and take up additional space.  Either way, these are all great knives that I would highly recommend. I personally own all three of these knives and usually bring my Benchmade on my backpacking trips.

Description:  Asolo is my boot manufacture of choice, if fact the last 3 pairs of boots that I have purchased have all been Asolo I like them so much.  Out of those boots the Asolo GTX are my favorite pair.  Not only are they the most comfortable boot that I have ever owned but they make for a great backpacking boot with their rigid sole and lightweight design. Here are some of the features of the Asolo GTX boot.

Most Dangerous Spiders In The United States

The Most Dangerous Spiders In The United States

The Most Dangerous Spiders In The United States

It is always important to be able to recognize dangerous spiders and insects when you are camping or backpacking.  In the United States of America the three most dangerous spiders are the Brown Recluse, Black Widow and Hobo spider.  You can use the photos above to reference these spiders in case you ever come across them.

#1 The Brown Recluse:

The Brown Recluse utilizes necrotic venom to destroy the tissue of its victim. Brown recluse spiders are usually between .24inches  and 0.79 inches in size, but may grow larger. While typically light to medium brown, they range in color from whitish to dark brown or blackish gray. There are important defining marking for the brown recluse on the dorsal side of their cephalothorax, with a black line coming from it that looks like a violin with the neck of the violin pointing towards the rear of the spider.  Because of this violin design on the Brown Recluse, they are often times called by their nicknames the fiddle spider or violin spider. Brown recluse spiders build irregular shaped webs that frequently include a shelter for the spider. The brown recluse frequently builds its web in woodpiles, garages, closets, garages, cellars, sheds, shoes, dressers, and other man made area that receive little traffic and are sheltered from weather or direct sunlight.  Unlike most web weaving spiders, the brown recluse spider will leave its web to hunt at night.

#2 The Black Widow:

The North American Black Widow spider (L. mactans, L. hesperus, and L. variolus) females are in most cases identified by a dark color and reddish hourglass shaped marking on their abdomen. The venomous bite of the black widow spider is considered particularly dangerous because of the neurotoxin latrotoxin, which causes the condition latrodectism. The bite can be very harmful to humans but is rarely fatal.  The prevalence of sexual cannibalism, a behavior in which the female eats the male after mating, has inspired the name black widow spider. The black widow construct a web of irregular threads and will frequently hang upside down near the center of its web and waits for insects to become entangled. Black widow spiders tend not to be aggressive but can inflict harmful bites if disturbed.

#3 The Hobo Spider

The hobo spider constructs a funnel shaped web of silk sheeting and it lies in wait at the small end of the funnel for prey insects to become captured in their webs. Hobo spiders sometimes build their webs in or around human habitations. Hobo spiders have a light stripe running down the middle of the sternum and can sometimes be difficult to identify because of their similarity to other spiders in the United States. If examined closely, the abdomen has a v shaped or zig zag pattern down the center with the tip of the v pointing towards the head of the spider. The bite of the hobo spider can be very toxic to humans.
